COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
REFLECTOR, INDICATING, CLEARANCE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item
Description (CID) for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This CID covers a clearance indicating reflector assembly, also referred to herein as
reflector, which is comprised of a red or amber reflecting element (lens), mounted in a one or two
piece metal flanged housing (see figure 1). This reflector is used on vehicles to give an indication
of presence to an approaching driver by reflected light from the headlamps on the approaching
vehicle. Reflectors may also be used on structures or road hazards for supplementary night
parking.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Materials. Unless otherwise specified herein, the materials used shall be in accordance with
the manufacturer's materials specifications for reflector, indicating clearance. The use of
recovered material made in compliance with regulatory requirements is acceptable provided all
requirements of this CID are met (see 3.1).
2.1.1 Lens. The reflecting elements shall be made of acrylic material and in accordance with
SAE J576. The colors shall be red or amber in accordance with SAE J578.
2.1.2 Flanged housing. The flanged housing shall be made of corrosion resistant material
(see 2.5).
