SIGN
(NON-POWERED, EXIT)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This description covers the requirements for signs which designate and provide directions to exit locations and shall be of the following types and classes.
Type 1 – Single faced
Type 2 – Double faced
Class A – Metal
Class B – Plastic
Salient characteristics:
Dimensions Unless otherwise specified, the exterior dimensions of the signs shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard practice. The “message face” dimensions shall be as follows (all dimensions are minimum):
Letters – 0.75 inch stroke, 6.0 inches high, 2.5 inches wide (except for the letter ”I”)
Spacing between letters – 0.50 inch + 0.125 inch (spacing between letters shall be uniform.
Background margin surrounding the word “EXIT” – 3/4 inch.
Materials. Exit signs (hereinafter referred to as signs) shall be made of corrosion resistant materials and coatings that are impervious to water and resistant to ultraviolet rays and discoloration. Unless otherwise specified, materials used in the construction of the manufacturer’s standards commercial signs.
General. All signs shall have a rectangular message face with the word “EXIT”.
Intended use. The signs are intended for both indoor and outdoor use. When placing indoors, the sign should receive an incident illumination of at least 5-foot candles, during the building occupancy. They should not be used indoors unless emergency lighting is available to provide the required illumination.
Options. The following options shall be available as specified:
(1) Arrows, as specified.
(2) Red, white, or green letters, as specified.
(3) Red, white, or green background, as specified.
(4) Opaque plastic sign with luminous background.
(5) Universal attachments for placement of signs over the face(s) of existing mounted, deenergized electrical exit signs.
(6) Corner mounting holes (4).
(7) Universal attachments for end, top, or pendant mounting.
(8) Pressure-sensitive backing for flush mounting (indoors).
Tests:
Reflected luminance (brightness). Signs shall be placed in an environment of uniform
Illumination 5.0 foot candles. The 5.0 foot-candle incident illumination shall be measured and certified with a calibrated cosine-corrected illumination photometer (see Figure 1 for suggested arrangement); following certification of the 5.0 foot-candle incident light, the illumination photometer may be removed. Luminance (brightness) measurements shall be made on the sign faces (letters and background) at points indicated in Figure 2 (“EXIT” figure). Each point of measurement shall be between 1/4 and 3/8 inch in diameter. The brightness measurements shall be made with calibrated luminance telephotometer should be calibrated in the same color region of the spectrum).
When tested as specified, (a) minimum measured light at any point on the sign’s bright surface (letters or background) shall equal or exceed 4.0 foot lamberts and (b) the maximum measured light at any point on the signs on the dark surface (letters or background) shall not exceed 2.0 foot lamberts.
Workmanship. signs shall be free of rough and sharp edges, slivers, and molding residue. Signs shall be of defects which detract from their appearance or may impair their serviceability.
